The Mingei Museum, located in San Diego’s Balboa Park, is an art museum dedicated to folk and craft art from around the world. The museum takes its name from the Japanese 民芸 (mingei), meaning “folk arts” or “arts of the people.” One of its current exhibits is A Salute to James Hubbell, which focuses on the 40+ year career of this local artist and humanitarian. The exhibit includes several of his works, photographs of others, and a documentary produced by local station KPBS. A Salute to James Hubbell runs through December 31, 2009, so now is the time to visit.

The reason I am writing about this exhibit is that one of my photographs, of Hubbell’s public art piece “Pacific Portal,” was chosen for use on the entrance to the Warren Theater Gallery where the Salute is on display. I was honored to have this work chosen for use on this project.

I want to welcome everyone to this new blog – The Recovering Teacher. For anyone who does not know me, I am a former English and history teacher living in San Diego County. Not long ago (at least in geological time) I decided to take my skills to a wider audience and began a freelance writing/editing career – to which I have also added photography, a long-time passion of mine. I am currently working with David Kamatoy of Kamatoy Media Group (KMG) as an editor, researcher, and blogger. I also write a blog, Scouting Santee, that covers the city of Santee in East San Diego County, and I am the official/unofficial photographer for the Santee Chamber of Commerce. In addition, I am editing a book that takes the current vampire craze and gives it a decidedly Southern California twist – no other clues to that for now.

The purpose of this blog is to share some of the work that I have done in my freelance career, and prior to that as it fits. I have done a bit of writing on my own and as part of a writing group on the old Yahoo! 360 platform, and will probably share some of that as well. Finally, I plan to feature some of my photography, including some entries and award winners from several online photo contests. I will be creating several different pages to contain the material I plan to share.

One other use of this blog will be to share random thoughts about various topics, including writing and education. I’m sure I will ruffle a few feathers on the latter topic – or at least I hope to. Maybe we can even have some worthwhile discussions on the subject of education “reform” locally and nationally.

If you have a writing, editing, or photography project you would like to discuss, you can reach me by email at recoveringteacher@gmail.com.
